Chicago Police Legal Affairs Officer Kenika Threatt talks briefly about Face It, the mask company she created shortly after the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Why did you start the mask company?

I started Face It to lift my daughter’s spirits because she was having a hard time finding work during this pandemic. Kenna’s a senior in high school. She is also a certified lifeguard and couldn’t work because the pools were closed. She applied at Potbelly and Jewel unsuccessfully. Face It is a way to show her that you don’t let someone’s “No” deter you. You’re talented, creative and gifted. Let’s use those skills. Be resourceful and the master of your own fate. You can be your own boss; control your time and determine how much money you want to make.

Who wears your masks?

Most of our customers are first responders for our Chicago Police and non-CPD masks and gaiters.

What kinds of designs and styles do you offer?

We offer comfortable, high quality, breathable, washable face masks and gaiters in a variety of design colors. For example we made masks with pink lettering to promote Breast Cancer Awareness.

Has it gone as well as planned?

The response to Face It is overwhelming! We are so humbled and grateful for the love and support of our first responders from CPD, CFD and OEMC. We stepped out on faith, did our research and learned along the way, and most importantly, we didn’t entertain any negativity.

What are your plans for expansion?

We’re scaling the business to include branding a few clothing items so…stay tuned!
